Get to Know Playwright F.J. Hartland

F.J. Hartland is the author of the upcoming one-act play Funeral in the Rain, coming soon from Pinwheel Plays!

TEN QUESTIONS

1. Tell us about your play:Funeral in the Rain is the story of one woman's life.  Two actors play the eleven individuals who have gathered at her graveside.  Each one of them had their lives touched by her and have a story to tell.

2. Who is your favorite character from your play and why? I don't really have favorite characters.  I try to give every character I write depth and dimension.  As an actor myself, I create characters actors want to play.

3. What is your favorite scene/moment in the play and why?  I am always moved in the final moment when the rain stops and the sun appears.

4. Give us an interesting fun fact about your play: It was named the "Best Play" in the Pittsburgh New Works Festival.

5. Tell us a bit about yourself: I am an professional actor (member of Actors Equity Association for over 25 years) as well as an experienced director.…

TEN QUESTIONS

1. Tell us about your play: My play is about a person struggling with questions about their purpose in life. It is a place that some of us go. We have doubt set in about what we should be doing. If we’re doing it the right way. And for others of us, it sometimes means asking if we just make everything worse by existing.

2. Who is your favorite character from your play and why? I like all of them. But I do love the phone in my play. I think I love it because being a millennial, there is this idea that we are always in our phones because we’re vain or selfish. And I have always been under the belief that you don’t quite know where someone is in life. I think there is something to having the most empathetic and emotionally expressive thing be this inanimate object.

TEN QUESTIONS

1.Tell us about your play:I’ll Keep Coming focuses on the struggles of grief. The thoughts and ideas that come to mind after someone very close and near has suddenly committed suicide, and how to live with those thoughts and ideas.

2.Who is your favorite character from your play and why?
Corban. He is a tortured character, and someone very real dealing with an unthinkable situation.

3.What is your favorite scene/moment in the play and why?
The ending has to be my favorite. It’s such a sad, terrible realization, but at the same time it is a beautiful and bittersweet moment. It sums up the tone and feeling of the entire play in one amazing moment.

4.Give us an interesting fun fact about your play:
My goal was to write Leland’s lines in such a way that he’s singing to Corban. Like an angel comforting a grieving soul, humming its quiet lullaby.
